Vermilion Edict Addressed to the People of Taiwan from the K'ang-hsi Emperor

On July 15, 1721, following the uprising led by Chu I-kui, the K'ang-hsi emperor warned the people of Taiwan to lay down their weapons, or face destruction by the Manchu forces. In the Ch'ing, chu-yü referred to the emperor's edicts and proclamations written in vermilion characters on yellow paper. Edicts written by the emperor himself were also called chu-yü.
