Provincial examinations were divided into three sessions each, one session a day. In general, the questions for the first session concerned themes from the Four Books and one five-character rhymed poem. The second session involved five essays on questions from the Five Classics. These essays had to be written in the eight-legged style, a style of rigid literary writing. The last session was an essay on the past or present government policies.
