Imperial Edict on the Occasion of Emperor Qianlong’s 50th Anniversary of Enthronement

In 1785, Emperor Qianlong issued an edict announcing the 50th anniversary of his enthronement. Then at his 70th birthday, Qianlong was delighted by having achieved a peaceful and prosperous reign as well as the advent of a son born to his great-grandson. Given that Emperor Kangxi held his 60th birthday banquet in 1713 and two Banquets of a Thousand Seniors respectively at the Garden of Pleasant Spring (Changchun Yuan) and the Palace of Heavenly Purity (Qianqing Gong) in 1722, Qianlong expanded the scale of revelry by making his own version of birthday banquet at the Palace of Heavenly Purity in 1785. The guest list was extended to include imperial clans, Joseon envoys, and commoner representatives; the number of guests aged 60 and above exceeded 3,900. Governors of all provinces were to locate families with extant members from across five generations, which, once approved by the Grand Council, would be bestowed a state reward.
