Bronze Human Mask

This is a realistic bronze human mask with single eyelids and wide, flat cheekbones. Six tubes have been cast onto the backs of the eyes, ears and nose, indicating that it is not an ordinary mask. A loop is positioned on the top for hanging, and the mask was discovered alongside Basin, Yu Shao Ladle, P’an Plate with Dragon Decor and Pottery Skin Scrapers. It is thus believed to have been hung in the washroom of the king of the Shang dynasty, but its exact use is unknown.
