The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Reaping the Harvest
By the mid-eighteenth century, nearly thirty varieties of rice existed in Taiwan. Plains indigenous peoples typically planted rice every other year, allowing the land to lay fallow in between. Because the species of rice were tall and slender, early indigenous were able to harvest the rice with their hands without using a sickle, a practice which is reflected in the painting.
