The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Refining Sugar

This painting depicts a sugar-refining workshop. Soon after their arrival, the Han Chinese began planting sugarcane in southern Taiwan and thereafter controlled the sugar industry. The men wearing pants and dark kerchiefs with queues and beards are probably Han Chinese.
