“Records of Diary of Living in the Mountains”

Author Xu Sanli’s Bequeathed Drafts of Huairen Hall, which was not published in its entirety, contains the inscription “delete, do not transcribe” above “Records of Diary of Living in the Mountains,” which was not included in the published volume. Its contents detail a study plan for the imperial examinations: the first half of the year was to be spent studying the Four Books for the first section; and the second half was for reviewing the Four Books and preparing for the second and third sections. As the exams were held triennially, the study of related contents was condensed into one year with repeated review, so the remaining two years could be dedicated to refinement and preparing one’s mentality.
