“Exemplification on Studies of the Examination Essays”
The questions of the first and second sections of the provincial and metropolitan examinations required candidates to respond in eight-legged essays, whereas the third was an essay on policy without a fixed format. Included in Collection of Sunmin Hall, “Exemplification on Studies of the Examination Essays” is a reference chapter aimed at the latter writing form. The author suggested that essays on policy should not be of “empty talk” considering the “real knowledge” of the classics, but on the other hand, exam candidates ought not to discuss current affairs in too much depth as one might “easily touch upon taboos.” Despite its short length, the writing does well to impart some writing crafts.
