Collected Literary Quotations of the Ancients in the Four Books
Jiang Yong’s work could be considered a bestseller during the Qing as scholars revered and incessantly reproduced the text, totaling sixteen editions. Its contents categorized the “ancients” into emperors and kings, minsters, the worthy and virtuous, sages, dukes, senior officials, miscellaneous, and female martyrs, with the source of each entry labeled in detail. Jiang Yong indicated that “of the ancients who have literary quotations in the Four Books, more than two hundred can be verified,” a textual criticism, which was undoubtedly convenient for exam candidates undergoing preparations.
