Genealogy of Respects to Mansou

After passing the court placement examination, Ma Xiandeng, who earned the degree of jinshi in 1847, served as the county magistrate of Yongning as well as the prefecture magistrate of Huaiqing and Kaifeng, all in Henan. Within this chronicle, his self-introduction states that at the age of forty: “I have taken the provincial exam nine times and did not pass. My entire family does not have a way to survive.” It continues to describe the financial debt he had taken on for the exams.
