The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Village Teacher
The Sinification of the plains indigenous peoples under Han Chinese influence began as early as the beginning of Qing dynasty rule of Taiwan in 1683—or perhaps even earlier. In 1734, Chinese-language schools were established in indigenous villages, where “village teachers” taught children to read and write Chinese. This picture depicts an idealized village Chinese school.
