Blind Cores
As molten bronze cools and solids, it contracts. If the thickness is not uniform, holes and other concave imperfections may form during cooling. To maintain uniform thickness, bronze should be solidified simultaneously. In some cases, cores thus remain encased in the bronze, referred to as “blind” cores. The “blind” cores on display here, one of an animal head and the other of the legs of a ting caldron, are probably “cores from recycled bronze” after a failed casting bronze was re-casted into furnace again.
