Evolution of Clay Models from Hsiao-t’un

Based on the technique of the back side of clay molds, it can be categorized into two types: Mold Type I (R016833 and R016634) has a flat and smooth back (mostly unearthed from the Structure B5 site at Hsiao-t’un); Mold Type II (R016697 and R017088) has a small clay block adhered to the back (mostly unearthed from Daliankeng). Type II is similar to the clay molds for bronzes cast during Yinxu Period III and IV excavated from the Miaopu North and the Xiaomintun sites. Therefore, it is now believed that the Hsiao-t’un had an earlier workshop for bronze casting as well as later workshops that had been relocated and continued into the late Shang dynasty.
