Command Edict Prohibiting Merchants and Citizens from Launching Boats for the Purposes of Maritime Trade
After the breakdown of negotiations between the Ch’ing court and Koxinga, the Ch’ing court issued this command edict on August 6th, 1656, announcing that merchants and citizens were strictly prohibited from going out to sea without first obtaining official permission. Furthermore, it was announced that citizens exposed for trading foodstuffs or other goods with Koxinga’s army would be prosecuted, and that if these citizens were proven to be guilty, they would then be sentenced to death regardless of social rank.
