Vermillion Copy of the Metropolitan Examination Paper by Xia Chou, the 7th-Ranked
After being transcribed and proofread, the vermillion copies were sent to be evaluated “behind the curtain” (neilian). For grading, the vermillion examination papers were assigned to the associate examiner, and then being counterchecked by the chief examiner with added punctuation as well as comments. The vermillion examination papers were inscribed with the characters qu (admission) and zhong (pass) respectively by the associate and chief examiners, and then commented on as rules.
