Military Palace Examination Paper by Li Changgeng, the 2nd-Ranked in the 3rd Category
Li Changgeng (1752–1807) at the age of twenty earned the degree of jinshi, ranked second in the third category, from the palace exam by grace in 1771. Li went on to serve as deputy general of the Qing navy in Penghu, Fujian; provincial military commander of Zhejiang; provincial military commander of the navy in Fujian of first class. During his time in office, Li on numerous occasions led campaigns against the notorious pirates such as Cai Qian (1761–1809) and Zhu Fen (1749–1808), both of whom had been plaguing the coasts of Fujian, Guangdong, and Taiwan. In 1807, Li was struck by a bullet in the neck during battle and died in office. The sealing cord and paper on the back of his palace exam paper and the paper itself were intact. Attached was a separate sheet on which the grades annotated by the four examination officials have been annotated in black ink.
