Communication for Proposing the Rescheduling of the Shuntian Provincial Examination

In 1821 during the Daoguang reign, “both inside and outside the capital, an epidemic was intermittently spreading.” Due to “the cells [of the examination compound] being small and the scholars’ fear of becoming infected with the disease by gathering in such numbers,” the Daoguang Emperor ultimately ordered the date of the Shuntian provincial exam be delayed one month. Once the weather cooled, it was believed, the epidemic would subside and the exam could be administered as usual.
