Provincial and Metropolitan Examination Officials
During the Qing dynasty, officials of the provincial and metropolitan examinations were divided into those who evaluated the exam papers and those who were responsible for matters pertaining to the examination compounds, and their ranks comprised chief, associate, and assistant examination officials. For those handling the internal affairs of the compounds, also referred to as “behind the curtain,” responsibilities included overseeing the exams and handling the exam papers; and the remaining officials were tasked with affairs outside of the compound, or “in front of the curtain.” The boundary of the “curtain” was notably strict as officials could not enter or leave without permission to avoid malpractice. In addition, records of the provincial and metropolitan exams document a large number of other attendants, many of whom were low-ranking officials in reserve or appointed on a trial basis.
