Imperial Edict on the Appointments of Newly Graduated Jinshi

The palace examination in 1847 conferred the degree of jinshi to 231 candidates. Aside from the three first-category jinshi who were directly appointed as compilers at Imperial Hanlin Academy, the remaining based on their ranking were assigned as follows: 53 as shujishi (temporary position at Imperial Hanlin Academy until the next exam); 34 as beginners at the six ministries; 4 as zhongshu (secretariat) at the Grand Secretariat; 121 to be appointed to county magistrates; and 14 were required to return and continue their studies. Moreover, one was retained as a secretary to fill vacancies as needed and a final candidate was punished for malpractice, both of which did not take the court placement exam.
