Vermilion Edict Addressed to the People of Taiwan from Emperor Kangxi
On July 15th, 1721, following the uprising led by Zhu Yigui, Emperor Kangxi warned the people of Taiwan to lay down their weapons or face destruction by the Manchu forces. According to the Qing code, zhuyu referred to edicts and proclamations written in vermilion characters on yellow paper by the Grand Secretariat following the emperor’s order. Edicts written by the emperor himself were also called zhuyu.
