Black Ink Version of the 3rd Section Military Metropolitan Examination Paper by Qiang Fan

Whether the provincial or metropolitan exam, candidates used black ink to answer questions, thus referred to as a black ink examination paper. To prevent impersonation, when candidates entered the examination compound, instructors were not present to verify the identities of candidates. Candidates were stamped on the cheek (later the forearm) and their date of birth, physical appearance, and native place were recorded on the front page of exam paper, information which would be used in roll call and when handing out the papers. Exam papers included a blank page for drafting responses, which would then be transcribed into the space with vermillion borders.
