Vermillion Copy of the Metropolitan Examination Paper by Song Sijing, the 4th-Ranked
Once transcribed and proofread against the original black ink version, the vermillion exam paper was sent “behind the curtain” (neilian). When being evaluated, vermillion copies were first assigned to associate examination officials, who would then present them to the chief examining official for detailed commentary and annotations. These exam papers were inscribed with the characters qu (admission) and zhong (pass), denoting the associate and chief examiners, respectively.
