Communication (Yihui) from the Ministry of Rites
In 1796, the Qianlong Emperor abdicated and appointed the crown prince to succeed his throne. The envoys carried with them an original copy and several duplicates of the edict announcing this imperial decision to all the provincial governments and the four major tributary states, namely Joseon, Annam, Ryukyu, and Siam. In return, the capital later received 18 memorials along with the original copy from the local governors, while the tributary states got to keep the original imperial edicts.
