Congratulatory Memorial for Bestowing an Honorary Title upon the Empress Dowager from Wan Guoben, the Nominal Acting Commander of Taiwan

A native of Hefei, Anhui, Wan Guoben (1834-1902) served as Regional Commander under the leadership of Liu Mingchuan (1836-1896), Governor of Taiwan. As a result of his involvement in the suppression of aboriginal uprising in central and northern Taiwan, Guoben was conferred the title of Baturu (“brave warrior”). Appointed as Acting Commander of Taiwan in 1887. And in 1888, he defeated aboriginal tribes such as Lujiawang, which was located in present-day Taitung. Subsequently, Wan was promoted to Provincial Military Commander.
