Command Edict Prohibiting Citizens from Engaging in Commercial Exchange with Rebellious Pirates
Koxinga had connections with merchants in many coastal cities, and even some inland vendors would sail out and trade with him. In response to this circumstance, Emperor K’ang-hsi issued this edict to all officials in the Chiangnan and Fukien regions, establishing a strict system of “watch and tithing”. Consequently, beginning in 1662, anyone found trading with Koxinga was tried as a traitor.
