The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Planting Taro

Similar to other Southeast Asian peoples, taro was a staple food for the indigenous peoples of Taiwan. Rice and sweet potato, which have become staples in Taiwan, seem to have been brought to the island by the Han Chinese. In this picture, “mountains aboriginal savages,” namely mountains shengfan, in Hongsoan County plant taro. The deer hide clothing they are wearing as well as their hairstyles were symbols of the “aboriginal savage.”
