The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Reaping the Harvest

By the eighteenth century, nearly thirty varieties of rice existed in Taiwan. Early records indicate that the Peipon used their hands not sickles to gather their crops. Because this specie of rice is tall and slender, the villagers are able to gather large stalks without the use of a blade. The land was tilled every second year.
