The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Husking Rice
Plains indigenous peoples did not use complex milling facilities, instead relying on wooden mortars and pestles to thresh and husk the rice, which was prepared in quantities suited to the needs of the following day. In the foreground of this picture, the tree with red flowers is an Erythrina which blossoms in spring. Because the indigenous traditionally did not use a calendar, the blossoming of the Erythrina marked the beginning of a new year.
