Compiled Essays on the Classics
Following the introduction of lithography to China in the latter half of the nineteenth century, due to the speed of book production and the size of a single print both increasing, the cost of the new technology was significantly lower than that of woodblock-printing, causing the production of reference books for the imperial exams to flourish; moreover, the size of printed characters could be made smaller yet remain legible. The lithographic printing house of well-known Dianshi Studio was largely established on the production of reference books, and their Compiled Essays on the Classics, compiled by Wu Jiongyan, is a collection of 256 writings on the classics, totaling eighty volumes, a momentous work which could only be realized owing to the technology.
