Shuang jian xue
Shuang jian xue is a work included in juan three and four of the novel Yuanyang zhen. Its plot depicts the false scholar Bu Heng who plagiarizes the essays and poetic works of others and finds a book carver that produces more than a thousand volumes of his collection, all under “my humble writings.” As time passes, the collection is reproduced and increasingly presented to others “for their comments.” This work reflects the reality that book production in the search of fame as well as the importance of one’s reputation were common notions held by scholars of the Ming-Qing period.
