Illustrated Commentary on The Story of Heroic Lovers
In The Story of Heroic Lovers, the poor conditions of the cells at an examination compound are detailed in a scene depicting protagonist An Ji, who returns home after taking an exam and is asked by his relatives about what he ate and drank as well as how he slept:
“I could put up with everything well enough. We were only allowed to drink water, but at least I didn’t see any excrement pit.” […] And his mother-in-law continued: “You didn’t even have a jar to go to the toilet?” An Ji replied: “It’s not true that there wasn’t one. From the first section to the third day it was difficult. But by the third section of the third day, the path leading up to that jar had an odor.”
