Records of Travels to Yunnan
In his Records of Travels to Yunnan, author Lin Zexu, chief examination officer of the Yunnan provincial examination in 1819, documented his official travels to Kunming. Contents include visiting famous mountains and other scenic sites, making rubbings of ancient memorial inscriptions, and participating in reciprocal poetry exchanges. Fascinatingly, chief examiners were stipulated by the court: “One must not travel idly or be received by others on the journey, and must not be received by the supervising officials or welcomed into their residences.” This work, however, which provides us with a more realistic view of official travels, illustrates that the stipulation was not always followed in practice.
