Bequeathed Collection of Jinqi Hall

Author Lü Dezhi took the imperial examinations eighteen times, failing each time, and thus resorted to teaching to make a living. His self-introduction found within this work tells of his bitter experience which would end with a degree of gongsheng at the age of eighty-two: “Eighteen times I have taken the exams with essays on the past worthies. I have failed to find the path to officialdom, with my name being below that of Sun Shan [i.e., final name on the list of successful candidates]. My aspirations of traveling far and building a career are slipping away like dispersing smoke.”
