Marked Slips
The three slips with the characters shang (upper) and xia (lower) were discovered at three separate sites, such as Edsen-gol, Jianshui Jinguan (Limes Gate), and Majuanwan in Dunhuang, indicating that their use was not an isolated phenomenon. Mirroring typical slips, they are about 23 cm in length, and the positioning of shang and xia divides the slip into three equal parts. IHP researchers have concluded that the two characters serve as a reference for where to place the cords and aligning the text when writing, thus being referred to as biaochi jian (marked slips).
