Miao “Lusheng” Wind Instrument

The “lusheng” is one of the most commonly used musical instruments among many ethnic groups in Southwest China, including the Miao, Dong (or Kam), Shui (Sui), Yao, Gelao (Klau), Dai, and Bulang (Plang). It is often said that “when the ‘lusheng’ sounds, one’s feet itch,” meaning that people cannot help but start dancing. The instrument is made of five or six bamboo pipes. The player blows air into them, causing the metal reeds inside to vibrate and produce sound. By covering the tone holes on the pipes, the player can change the pitch.
