Funerary Figurines
The stone funerary figurines on display here were used in ancestor worship rituals in the Wuding and Luquan regions of northern Yunnan. In his interpretation of the Yi “Ritual Text for Mourning,” Ma Xue-liang, who acquired the figurines, explains that they are crafted from jade-green stones, extracted from a riverbank and polished until they gleam before being carved. The figurines’ body parts are assembled and connected with fine copper wire, with silver plates sometimes inlaid at the joints for reinforcement.
