Pratique des examens militaires en Chine
Pratique des examens militaires en Chine, published by French missionary Étienne Zi (1851–1932), concerns the martial examination system, illustrating the entire process with a remarkable number of drawings. The image on display here is “ball shooting,” which was tested in the first section of the examination. While on horseback, candidates used flat-tipped arrows to shoot at a ball resting in a depression of the platform. In 1760, “ball shooting” was moved from the second section to the first, thereby being evaluated along with mounted archery.
