Perspective Drawing of the Cells at the Provincial Examination Compound
The cells of provincial examination compounds doubled as quarters for test-taking and accommodation. Each three-walled cell, measuring four chi long and three chi wide, faced south and housed one candidate. The east and west walls had a set of protruding bricks that supported wood boards, which could be adjusted to serve as a table and seat or a bed. There was also a small recess in the back wall where candidates could place an oil lamp and personal belongings.
