The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Traveling Vehicle
The plains indigenous peoples did not use a calendar and began their year when the flowers blossomed in the third lunar month. They would then clean their carts. The women would adorn themselves with ornaments, and the unmarried young men, called “mada,” would drive the females from village to village. The calabash depicted here was an important domestic implement for the plains indigenous and a symbol of wealth.
