Inscribed Clay Molds

Artifacts R016949 (square ting cauldron mold, Yinxu Period III) and R016694 (ku vessel mold, Yinxu Period I) are both carved with the character “huan,” which may indicate the place name of the Hsiao-t’un temple-palace area or of the workshop. The inscription carved on R016946 appears to be a soldier holding a shield or spear, perhaps the mark of a workshop or craftsman.
