Development of Bronzes Beginning with Chüeh Vessels
Ceramic kuei vessels in the late Neolithic period have been discovered distributed over a wide area from the Yangtze to the Yellow River basins. This form of ceramic vessel was used to warm lijiu, a sweet wine which was fermented at low temperature and drunk in certain rites. During the Erlitou period (also regarded as the Xia dynasty, ca. 1900–1500 BCE), the most advanced casting technique were utilized to produce bronze chüeh vessels for warming this ritual wine, demonstrating the authority of the king.
