Stand-Alone Motif Molds
The “stand-alone motif mold” refers to a clay mold with only a carved motif, such as this image of a mold for the ring foot of a ku vessel (for the artifact, see “Signature Clay Molds”). Generally speaking, bronzes have many bands of motifs, with those on ku vessels being only on the neck (such as the sharp triangle pattern on this item) or on the ring foot; it is evident with the discoveries of their stand-alone motif molds. In addition to those of the ku vessel, other rectangular, round, and curved stand-alone motif molds have been unearthed. It can be inferred that stand-alone motif molds are embedded into the assemblage or supported by clay stacked behind to complete the whole model.
