Inscribed Deer Skull
Unearthed during the fourth archaeological excavation at Yinxu in 1931, the deer skull bears an inscription of twelve oracle-bone characters: “On the day Wuxu, the King hunted at Hao (outskirts); [the game was] offered to Wen Wu Ding, after the king returned from a campaign.” Only two such inscribed deer skulls have been unearthed to date, both of which are housed at the IHP. This is the better-preserved piece, retaining both the skull and antlers.
