The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Guarding the Pass
This picture shows a plains indigenous village located near an “aboriginal savage,” namely shengfan (sheng meaning “uncooked” or “untamed”), settlement. The village is surrounded by a bamboo fence, and a group of young men carrying spears, bows, and arrows have been sent to patrol the outskirts of the town, protecting the village from the nearby shengfan. Three shengfan figures stand in the background. Their hairstyles and deer hide clothing are intended to indicate that they were “untamed” and not yet influenced by Han culture.
