Slips for Writing Practice

Learning to write broadly started with being able to steadily manipulate the brush by practicing the horizontal, vertical, dot, left-slanting downward, and other strokes or by writing simple single characters. Those who desired to practice often made use of discarded slips to copy certain characters or sentences, such as repeatedly writing the same character (no. 45.10B) or copying previously written sentences from readily available documents (no. 46.5).
