Weight of Paper in the Han Dynasty
The Jie on display reads “wushiyi zhi zhong wu jin” (fifty-one leaves of paper weigh five jin). According to the Han scale, 1 jin is 16 liang; therefore, 51 leaves of paper were 80 liang with a single leaf being 1.5 liang or more, paper was imaginably thick. Scholars conclude that the relatively thick paper excavated from early periods was used for wrapping not writing.
