Routine Memorial for Requesting Imperial Order of Recruiting Successful Candidates in the Civil Metropolitan Examination by Grace
Each province received different quotas of successful candidates for both the provincial and metropolitan exams. For the provincial exams, the numbers were based on factors such as level of cultural activity, population, and taxation. In the early Qing, however, there was not an established quota for the metropolitan exams until 1712, when the number of candidates who would receive the degree of jinshi being determined following the third section was formalized.
