Routine Memorial for Requesting Imperial Order of Recruiting Successful Candidates in the Military Metropolitan Examination
Each province received different quotas of successful candidates for both the provincial and metropolitan exams. The quota for the former was specified according to the population of the province, but in 1687, the Kangxi Emperor lowered those of the civil provincial exam by half, which could be increased depending on the local number of talented persons. For the metropolitan exam, the quotas were not determined on a provincial basis in the early Qing. Starting in 1712, however, the real number of those skilled in archery and equestrianism of each section was considered along with the number of military juren taking the exam; after deliberation, a quota was set for each province based on its size.
