The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Hunting Deer
The most important quarry of the plains indigenous peoples was deer. With the arrival of the Chinese and the Dutch in the seventeenth century, however, the trade in deer hides expanded and excessive hunting dramatically reduced their population. Here, we see a hunt described as “chu tsao” (lit. “emergence from the grass”). The hairstyles and sashes of the hunters suggest their ages to be between ten and twenty.
