The Genre Paintings of Taiwan’s Aboriginal Peoples: Guarding the Pass

This picture shows a Peipon village located near a 「shengfan」 settlement. The village is fenced in bamboo, and a group of young men carrying spears, bows, and arrows have been sent to control the outskirts of the town, protecting the village from the nearby 「shengfan」. Three 「shengfan」 figures stand in the background. From their hairstyles and deer skin clothing we may ascertain that they have not yet been influenced by the Han Chinese.
